At least seven people have been killed in a renewed attack by suspected herders on Anwuel village in the Oglewu district of Ohimini Local Government Area, Benue State.
Confirming the incident to Channels Television, the Executive Chairman of Ohimini LGA, Adole Gabriel, said the attacks, which spanned two days, left several residents dead and forced many others to flee their homes.
According to Gabriel, the violence began on Monday when two people were killed. He said the state governor immediately dispatched his Special Adviser on Security alongside troops to contain the situation.
“We visited Angwuel today, where soldiers of Operation Whirl Stroke have been stationed, but the herders returned in a Gestapo-style attack on Tuesday evening, killing five more people,” the chairman said.
Gabriel described the assault as unprovoked and expressed concern over the safety of residents, noting that the community has since been deserted. He, however, confirmed that additional security personnel have been deployed to restore calm in the area.
News of the attack quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread outrage from residents and victims of past assaults in the state.
The latest violence has renewed calls for stronger government action and international support to end persistent attacks on farming communities in North-Central Nigeria, where clashes between herders and farmers have continued for over a decade.
