Tottenham Hotspur marked their homecoming in style, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Burnley on the opening day of the Premier League season.
Fresh from their UEFA Europa League triumph in May but reeling from midweek UEFA Super Cup disappointment against PSG, Spurs showed no signs of fatigue as Thomas Frank’s reign began with a statement win.
The hosts almost struck inside the first minute when Lucas Bergvall tested Burnley debutant Martin Dúbravka, but it took only 10 minutes for the breakthrough to arrive.
Mohammed Kudus pounced on a defensive error and squared for Richarlison, who calmly slotted into the corner.
Scott Parker’s Clarets, returning to the top flight, looked disjointed after switching to a five-man defence. They eventually settled, forcing efforts through Josh Laurent, Lyle Foster and Hannibal Mejbri.
However, Burnley were left frustrated on the stroke of half-time when appeals for a penalty—after Pedro Porro bundled Jaidon Anthony over—were waved away by referee Michael Oliver.
Spurs started the second half with the same intensity, Richarlison again going close before Burnley threatened at the other end, as Hannibal delayed his shot when through on goal and Anthony forced Guglielmo Vicario into a sharp save.
But just as the visitors grew into the contest, Tottenham struck again. Kudus delivered another telling cross, and Richarlison acrobatically volleyed home his second of the evening.
With confidence flowing, Spurs wrapped up the points on the hour mark when Brennan Johnson raced clear and lofted the ball over the onrushing Dúbravka to seal a dominant win.
The result ensured Tottenham’s fifth consecutive home victory on the opening day of a league campaign, while Burnley’s unwanted record extended to four straight defeats in season openers.
