The House of Representatives has dismissed reports of a planned showdown against Speaker Abbas Tajudeen when the chamber reconvenes on September 23.
In a statement on Sunday, House spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi said members remain united under Abbas’s leadership and described the report by a national newspaper as misleading.
He said the publication had elevated “isolated remarks and informal conversations from House WhatsApp groups” as though they represented the position of any caucus or the House itself.
“Contrary to insinuations of an impending showdown, the House remains united under the leadership of Hon. Abbas Tajudeen. With 360 members across diverse political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, the House reflects Nigeria’s full heterogeneity,” Rotimi stated.
He stressed that while lawmakers are free to express personal opinions, official positions must follow parliamentary procedure through caucus leaders, committees, or plenary resolutions. He credited Abbas with fostering consensus in the 10th Assembly despite its diversity.
On concerns about delayed constituency project payments, Rotimi said the issue was a national fiscal challenge, not unique to lawmakers. He noted that the Appropriations Committees had engaged with the Finance Ministry and that payments had begun.
“The House remains focused on preparing for resumption on September 23 with renewed commitment to national priorities,” he added.
