President Bola Tinubu on Monday welcomed the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, to the State House in Abuja, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed via X.

Prince Edward is in Nigeria from November 17 to 23 to lead a series of events in Lagos aimed at expanding the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award globally. The week-long programme will bring together nearly 200 young people from over 50 countries, along with leaders, policymakers, and representatives from international youth movements.

Participants will engage in a three-day youth leadership programme, followed by the International Award’s triennial Forum, which focuses on broadening access to the Award worldwide. Last year, approximately 1.2 million young people across more than 130 countries participated in the Award. While the UK accounts for half of the participants, Kenya has the second-highest enrollment. In Nigeria, participation has surged by 37% over the past year, reflecting growing interest across West Africa.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award encourages young people to develop skills, volunteer, and engage in physical activities, aiming to cultivate leadership, resilience, and global citizenship.
