.New details have emerged on the death of ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who died on Monday following an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja .
Contrary to initial reports that the 29-year-old broadcaster was directly attacked by the robbers, a family friend, Kaanayo Nwachukwu, said Maduagwu sustained fatal injuries while attempting to escape from her apartment before the intruders reached her.
According to Nwachukwu, the robbers raided a six-flat apartment complex, moving from one flat to another. He said police were alerted but failed to arrive promptly. In fear, Maduagwu reportedly jumped out of her window, suffering severe injuries.
Nwachukwu claimed that when officers eventually arrived, Maduagwu was still alive but pleaded in vain for them to take her to the hospital. He alleged that the police declined, saying their vehicle had no fuel. She later died before help could reach her.
He described the incident as avoidable, blaming it on systemic failure. “That’s how Nigeria happened to this young, vibrant, promising star,” Nwachukwu wrote in a tribute.
Maduagwu, born on December 26, 1995, studied law in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria to attend law school. She joined ARISE News in 2024.
In a statement, ARISE News management described her as a “cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose passion and professionalism touched colleagues and viewers. The organisation extended condolences to her family and called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
