It was a night of glitz, glamour, and celebration as 25-year-old Onyinyechi Basil from Anambra State emerged as the winner of Miss Universe Nigeria 2025 at a star-studded finale held on Saturday, August 30. The event, hosted at the Balmoral Event Centre and the Convention Center of Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together celebrities, dignitaries, and pageant enthusiasts from across the country.

Basil outshone 21 other contestants after a highly competitive show that featured rounds in swimwear, traditional costume, evening gown, and the intense question-and-answer segment. Her poise, eloquence, and advocacy focus set her apart, earning the admiration of both judges and audience.

She succeeds Chidimma Adetshina and will now carry the nation’s hopes on the global stage as she represents Nigeria at the 74th Miss Universe pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, scheduled for November 20, 2025.

Road to Victory

The competition began with the unveiling of 22 contestants on August 26, before narrowing down to the top 10 and eventually the final five contestants: Miss Ogun (Irene Ikediashi), Miss Lagos (Damilola Bolarinde), Miss Akwa Ibom (Idah Eno), Miss Bayelsa (Fortune Kurobo), and Miss Anambra (Onyinyechi Basil).

At the climax of the evening, Basil was crowned queen, while Miss Lagos, Damilola Bolarinde, emerged as first runner-up. Fortune Kurobo of Bayelsa clinched the second runner-up position, with Miss Ogun, Irene Ikediashi, taking third runner-up. Meanwhile, Miss Akwa Ibom, Idah Eno, was crowned Miss Supranational Nigeria 2025.

A Voice for Women and Education

Beyond beauty, Basil has signaled that her reign will focus strongly on advocacy. In her acceptance speech, she stressed her commitment to promoting women’s education and empowerment, adding:

“I want young girls to know that they can be more, achieve more, and still celebrate their cultural identity.”

Her win continues Anambra State’s growing reputation for producing beauty queens who not only shine on stage but also use their platforms to champion social issues.

Rewards and Opportunities

As the new Miss Universe Nigeria, Basil is expected to receive a cash prize (amount yet to be disclosed), material gifts, brand endorsements, extensive training opportunities, and paid appearances. She will also embark on projects that highlight cultural diversity, women’s rights, and educational advocacy as part of her reign.

Looking Ahead

With the global pageant just months away, all eyes will be on Onyinyechi Basil as she prepares to showcase Nigeria’s beauty, culture, and resilience at the Miss Universe 2025 competition in Thailand.

Her triumph marks not just a personal milestone but also a national moment of pride, as Nigeria once again positions itself to shine on the world stage.
