The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, accusing them of prioritising political battles over the safety and welfare of Nigerians.

Obi, in a post on his verified X account on Tuesday, said the ruling party was more focused on engineering internal crises within opposition parties than tackling rising insecurity across the country.

He noted that former U.S. President Donald Trump recently described Nigeria as “now disgraced,” a remark that initially drew public outrage. However, Obi said the wave of killings and abductions in recent weeks had made the claim difficult to dismiss.

Citing the killing of a military general and the kidnapping of 25 people within one week, as well as the latest terror attack in Kwara State, Obi said the government should be uniting the nation instead of “fueling party squabbles and distractions.”

He also recalled how former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua once directed then-INEC chairman Maurice Iwu to ensure political stability across all parties, insisting that democracy thrived only when every political formation functioned within the law.

According to him, the current administration appears intent on weakening opposition parties such as the PDP, Labour Party and SDP.

“In democratic nations, opposition is respected, elections reflect the will of the people, and governance carries everyone along for peace and prosperity,” he wrote, adding that a “New Nigeria is possible.”
