Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has dismissed Gerard Sanspeur, the second deputy governor of the Bank of Mauritius, following reports of a worsening rift within the central bank’s leadership.
The decision, reported by L’Express on Friday, comes after weeks of speculation over tensions between Sanspeur and Governor Rama Sithanen. Local media said the standoff had drawn concern from the highest levels of government.
Earlier this week, Ramgoolam told Le Défi Media Group that the situation was “unacceptable” and promised swift action. “I am trying to move as quickly as possible and hope to resolve the issue by the end of the week,” he said.
Sanspeur, the central bank’s number three official, announced on Facebook that he would hold a press conference at 3 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Friday.
The dismissal highlights ongoing instability at the Bank of Mauritius, an institution central to the country’s monetary policy and financial stability. Analysts say Ramgoolam’s intervention reflects concern that internal disputes could erode confidence in the bank at a time of economic uncertainty.
