Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has completed a season-long loan move to La Liga giants Barcelona.

The 27-year-old joins on a 12-month deal, with the Spanish club holding an option to make the transfer permanent in 2026 for a fee of £30.3 million (€35 million). Barcelona will cover the entirety of Rashford’s wages during the loan spell, after the England international agreed to a pay cut.

Removing Rashford from their wage bill is expected to save United between £14 million and £15 million over the next year.

Rashford trained with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday and is set to be included in Barcelona’s squad for their upcoming pre-season tour of Asia, which kicks off with a trip to Japan on Thursday.

This marks Rashford’s second loan move in under a year and his first spell outside the Premier League. He made 17 appearances for Aston Villa during a brief loan stint last season, which helped earn him a recall to the England squad.

Since making his senior debut in 2016, Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United, placing him 15th on the club’s all-time top scorers list. A product of United’s academy, his departure signals the end of an era — but one that has been long in the making.

Rashford’s exit from Old Trafford has been building for months. Manager Ruben Amorim dropped him for the Manchester derby on December 15, 2024 — a match that would prove to be his last in a United shirt.

Amorim later questioned Rashford’s commitment, stating he would “rather give a place on the bench to his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than to someone who doesn’t give the maximum every day.”

Rashford’s struggles, however, began before Amorim’s arrival. Despite signing a new five-year deal in 2023 following a stellar 30-goal season, his form collapsed the following campaign. He scored just eight times in 43 appearances during the 2023/24 season and was involved in multiple disciplinary incidents under former manager Erik ten Hag.

He was dropped for arriving late to a team meeting before a match against Wolves, apologised for attending a birthday party just hours after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, and missed an FA Cup tie against Newport after being pictured partying in Belfast before reporting sick to training.

Amid growing frustration at the club, Rashford was one of five players who expressed a desire to leave. All five were told to train separately from the first-team squad during the off-season.

With his long-term future at United uncertain, Rashford now embarks on a new chapter in Spain — hoping to reignite his career in Barcelona’s iconic colours.
