Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will remain in power in the state beyond 2027, while also reclaiming the presidency and recording sweeping victories in the next general elections.

Makinde made the declaration on Sunday at the Oyo State PDP Congress held at the Basketball Arena of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The event was attended by ward and local government executives, ad-hoc delegates, and party stakeholders from all 33 local government areas of the state.

The governor commended the peaceful conduct of the party’s congresses from ward to state levels, describing them as a demonstration of PDP’s internal democracy and unity. He urged the newly elected state executive members to work diligently to secure victory for the party at all levels in 2027.

“This exercise is to ensure that the PDP continues to remain in power in Oyo State beyond 2027,” Makinde said. “The executives that will emerge from this exercise have a clear mandate — deliver the PDP from the presidential to the councillorship positions in 2027.”

He also assured party members who were yet to benefit from his administration that they had not been forgotten, promising that they would be reached soon.

At the congress, Hon. Dayo Ogungbenro was re-elected as State Chairman, while Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke emerged as Deputy State Chairman. Others elected include Oyelami Oyeyemi (State Secretary), Olawumi Elizabeth Toyin (Women Leader), and Bello Kazeem Olalekan (Youth Leader).

Chairman of the Oyo PDP Congress Electoral Panel, Senator Austin Akobundu, praised Makinde’s leadership, describing Oyo as one of the strongest PDP chapters in the country. He said the party had grown significantly under the governor’s stewardship, citing recent electoral successes as evidence.

Party leaders including PDP National Deputy Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu; and Senator Gbenga Babalola, lauded the peaceful exercise and reaffirmed their support for unity within the party.

In his acceptance speech, Ogungbenro thanked Makinde and other leaders for their support, pledging to lead the new executive in delivering victory for the PDP in 2027.

Former Jigawa State Governor and PDP founding member, Alhaji Sule Lamido, also congratulated the 39 newly elected executives, urging them to work for the party’s progress.

The exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and witnessed by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, Speaker of the State Assembly Adebo Ogundoyin, serving and former lawmakers, local government chairmen, and other stakeholders.
