The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is being used to target opposition politicians ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a statement on Tuesday, HURIWA described the recent interrogation and detention of former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, over alleged ₦189 billion fraudulent withdrawals, as a politically motivated move aimed at weakening the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition.
National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, accused the EFCC of abandoning its statutory anti-corruption mandate and acting as “an attack dog” for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He claimed the agency’s actions formed part of “a calculated pattern of harassment” against prominent opposition figures following the coalition’s declaration to challenge Tinubu’s re-election bid.
According to HURIWA, the EFCC has “ceased to operate as a fearless watchdog” and has instead become “a tool to intimidate, blackmail, and dismantle the opposition,” alleging that anti-graft powers were being weaponised for political ends.
