Hundreds of residents displaced by renewed bandit attacks in parts of Gombe State have taken shelter at the residence of the District Head of Tumu in Akko Local Government Area.

The displaced persons, who fled Galadima and Sabon Kaura communities, include men, women and children who arrived at the district head’s compound with little or no belongings. Many were seen occupying open spaces within the compound, while others sought shelter under trees and makeshift structures.

Eyewitnesses described distressing scenes, noting that several women and children showed signs of trauma and physical exhaustion after fleeing their homes. According to residents, the attackers invaded the affected communities late at night, forcing villagers to escape to avoid further violence.

Local authorities, traditional leaders and community volunteers have begun coordinating emergency support, including the provision of food, water and temporary shelter, to assist the displaced families. However, the increasing number of internally displaced persons has placed significant strain on available resources, raising concerns about the sustainability of the response.

A community source said the situation remained critical, adding that many of the displaced persons were in urgent need of medical and psychosocial support. “Most of them arrived here frightened and confused. The children, in particular, are deeply affected by what they witnessed,” the source said.

Residents and observers have warned that the continued rise in bandit attacks poses a serious threat to rural communities in the state, calling on authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent further displacement.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the attacks or on measures being taken to secure the affected areas and enable the safe return of displaced residents.
