Emmanuel Macron is fighting a tough battle against Marine Le Pen to decide who will be the next president of France.

Emmanuel Macron

Incumbent Mr Macron, 44, is a pro-European centrist who is asking voters to trust him for a second five-year term.

His presidency has been troubled by protests, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Marine Le Pen

Far-right candidate Ms Le Pen, 53, has seen her support grow during her campaign to its highest level ever.

While popular among nationalists, some see her ideas as too extreme and anti-democratic, such as her plan to ban Muslim headscarves in public, or her ties to Russia.

What will the result mean?

The result is likely to have huge repercussions for Europe’s future and could also impact the Ukraine conflict, as France has played a key role in diplomatic efforts there and supported sanctions against Russia.
