ARISE News anchors Dr. Reuben Abati and Ojy Okpe were among participants at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Exercise Haske Biyu in Kaduna State, where discussions focused on the role of the family in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
Abati, who delivered a guest lecture, stressed the importance of aligning family values with national security goals to improve coordination among the Armed Forces, Police, and other security agencies. He said national security rests not only on military strength and intelligence but also on the moral fibre of citizens and the narratives that unite them.
Okpe, a discussant at the session, highlighted the role of responsible journalism in shaping narratives that empower families and communities. She called on the media to go beyond profit-making by celebrating role models, fostering unity, and inspiring positive societal values.
The session was moderated by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, while AFCSC Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Alhaji, coordinated the exercise.
Earlier, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), represented by ACGN Shenu, delivered a lecture warning that drug abuse—currently affecting over 14 million Nigerians—remains a major threat to national security. He noted that despite more than 69,000 arrests under NDLEA’s “Offensive Action” strategy, families remain the first line of defence against crime and insecurity.
Stakeholders from the security, defence, and media sectors unanimously agreed that national stability begins at home, with the family as the foundation of a safer society.
The Exercise Haske Biyu, themed “Family and National Security”, runs from September 15 to October 3, 2025.
