Chelsea have been fined £25,000 by the Football Association following a string of yellow cards and a red during their 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend.
The match saw goalkeeper Robert Sanchez dismissed just five minutes into the game, while United’s Casemiro was later sent off for a second booking before half-time. Chelsea players Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Enzo Fernandez, Tosin Adarabioyo and Tyrique George were all cautioned, taking the club’s tally to six bookings and triggering the FA’s automatic sanction.
This marks the fourth time in two seasons that Chelsea have been fined for disciplinary issues, having paid escalating penalties in matches against Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle last term. The club has already collected 12 yellow cards and one red in five league games this season, ranking among the highest in the division.
Manager Enzo Maresca downplayed concerns over discipline, insisting the side’s fighting spirit remains a strength. “It’s something we need to improve, but I like the way the team are fighting,” he said. “There are things we can control and do better, but in terms of team spirit, I’m very happy.”
Chelsea face Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday. Sanchez, who served his suspension in the Carabao Cup against Lincoln City, is available for selection.
