Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared that he is ready to resign from office if President Bola Tinubu fails to win Edo State in the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview with AIT on Thursday, Okpebholo said the All Progressives Congress (APC) now dominates the state’s political landscape, adding that the party faces “no real opposition” ahead of the general elections. He attributed the APC’s growing influence to Tinubu’s popularity and the initiatives he has undertaken since assuming office.
Okpebholo pointed to recent bye-election results in Esan as evidence of the party’s strengthened position, asserting that Edo residents will “thank Asiwaju with their votes.” He said, “Asiwaju is even more popular than me here now because Edo people already know that what I’m doing is because of Asiwaju’s impact. You will see the kind of result that will come out from here because there’s no opposition in Edo. If he does not win, I’d resign.”
The governor also highlighted his grassroots approach to governance, which he said was influenced by his mentorship under the late Chief Tony Anenih. “I’m a politician. I understudied Chief Anenih, and my style of politics is not thuggery; it’s grassroots,” he added.
Okpebholo further criticised former Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming that Obaseki’s performance during his tenure contributed to his unpopularity among Edo residents.
