A serving officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service, identified as Adebayo Pelumi, has allegedly murdered a photojournalist, Ayo Aiyepeku, in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.
The gruesome incident reportedly occurred in Aiyepeku’s office located in the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Lokoja, where the suspect allegedly struck the victim on the head, butchered his body, and stored the dismembered remains in a refrigerator.
Eyewitnesses say Pelumi, who is currently on the run, is attached to Zone H of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Makurdi, which covers Kogi and Benue States.
A witness who spoke anonymously told ARISE News: “When we discovered that Ayo Aiyepeku had been killed and his body dismembered, we immediately alerted the Police, and they began tracking the suspect.”
Confirming the incident to ARISE News on Wednesday, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said the case was reported at the A Division Police Station as a case of culpable homicide.
“The Divisional Police Officer promptly led officers to the scene of the crime. The Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, has directed the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a thorough investigation,” the PPRO stated.
He added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, who will be prosecuted once arrested.
