Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has demanded explanations from the country’s Football Federation and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after the Stallions narrowly missed out on a World Cup playoff spot to Nigeria.
The controversy followed Burkina Faso’s 3–1 victory over Ethiopia, which the team believed had secured their qualification. However, CAF later applied a rule discounting points earned against the lowest-ranked team in each group — a decision made following Eritrea’s withdrawal from the qualifiers. The adjustment altered the standings, ultimately favouring Nigeria, who had only drawn twice with Zimbabwe, the bottom team in their group.
According to reports, the decision left Traoré enraged and demanding a clear explanation of how the recalculated standings denied Burkina Faso progression. He has asked for a detailed breakdown of the qualification process and the criteria used to determine the final rankings.
The Stallions, who were forced to play several qualifiers away from home due to renovations at their Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou, had shown strong form upon their return securing crucial wins that boosted their playoff hopes before the CAF ruling was announced.
