Sunderland marked their long-awaited Premier League (PL) comeback in stunning fashion with a commanding 3-0 victory over West Ham United — a result that condemned the Hammers to their 17th opening-day defeat in PL history, more than any other club.
Back in the top flight after an eight-year absence, the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light was electric. West Ham, however, showed early intent as Jarrod Bowen forced Robin Roefs into a smart stop at the near post inside the opening minutes.
The Black Cats quickly settled, with Habib Diarra linking up neatly with Eliezer Mayenda to test Mads Hermansen.
The visitors’ best moment of the half came just before the half-hour, when new signing El Hadji Malick Diouf saw his low strike blocked by Daniel Ballard. Bowen grew more influential as half-time approached, but Graham Potter’s side failed to make their pressure count, and Sunderland reached the interval on level terms.
Régis Le Bris’ men came out strongly after the restart. Simon Adingra went close before Jenson Seelt was forced off following a heavy collision.
The breakthrough finally arrived on the hour, when Omar Alderete’s pinpoint cross was expertly headed in by Mayenda to ignite celebrations across Wearside.
Potter turned to his bench, introducing former Newcastle striker Callum Wilson to a chorus of boos, but Sunderland only grew stronger.
In the 73rd minute, Adingra delivered another teasing cross, this time met by Ballard, whose header doubled the lead and put the hosts firmly in control.
With West Ham struggling to muster a response, Sunderland sealed the points in stoppage time. Wilson Isidor surged from halfway, cut inside at the edge of the area, and coolly slotted into the far corner to cap a dream return to the PL.
For Sunderland, it was a landmark win, ending a run of nine winless top-flight season openers (D3, L6).
For West Ham, though, the pressure is already mounting on Potter after a flat display and just his second defeat in 18 games against newly-promoted opposition.
