Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday led a high-powered delegation on a royal visit to congratulate the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan, following his recent coronation.
Abubakar was accompanied by former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Senator Iyorcha Ayu; former Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke; and former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai.
Speaking during the visit, the former vice president tendered an unreserved apology to the Olubadan for his absence at the coronation ceremony held last Friday, citing unavoidable logistical and protocol challenges.
“Kabiyesi, I want to begin with an apology,” Abubakar said. “On behalf of my delegation, I regret our inability to personally witness your coronation, which we recognise as the fulfilment of your lifelong ambition. Our absence was not deliberate but due to protocol logistics. Nonetheless, we have always looked forward to this day. Please accept our heartfelt apology and congratulations. May God bless your reign and grant Ibadan continued progress.”
In his response, Oba Ladoja warmly welcomed Abubakar and his entourage, noting his long-standing personal and political ties with the visitors. The monarch recalled that Abubakar had been the first to inform him of the passing of the late Olubadan, adding that he had always anticipated his eventual ascension to the throne.
Oba Ladoja, however, reaffirmed his withdrawal from partisan politics, stressing that his primary duty on the throne is to serve humanity with fairness and justice.
“Now that I am Olubadan, I am no longer entitled to be anything else. My task is to serve my people. I have just passed 81, and the rest of my years will be devoted to Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Africa and indeed humanity,” the monarch said.
He further pledged to uphold peace, prosperity and justice in Ibadanland while assuring his guests of continued friendship and appreciation.
