A light aircraft traveling from Kenya’s coastal region to the Maasai Mara National Park crashed early Tuesday, leaving all 12 people on board feared dead.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), in a statement, confirmed that the plane, which departed from the popular tourist resort of Diani, was headed for Kichwa Tembo a private airstrip in the Maasai Mara when it went down around 5:30 a.m. local time (0230 GMT).
“The aircraft had 12 persons on board,” the KCAA said, adding that rescue and investigation teams had been deployed to the crash site to determine the cause of the incident.
Details regarding the victims and possible causes of the crash remain unclear as authorities continue recovery and assessment operations.
This latest tragedy comes just two months after a similar incident in August, when a light aircraft operated by medical charity Amref crashed near Nairobi, killing six people and injuring two others.
