Prof. Jesse Uneke, vice chancellor of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Uburu, Ebonyi State, attributed the failure of the majority of the nation’s public universities to ineffective administration.

Uneke made this statement on Thursday, at a press conference taking place in the conference room of the university in Uburu, Ebonyi State, asserting that state owned universities should perform better than private ones, due to government intervention and other benefits. He pointed that,

“There are many issues and problems surrounding universities, and most of the time, people blame the Federal Government. That shouldn’t be the case. Bad leadership is the main cause of issues with universities across the country. This is very important. Check the leadership if you attend a university and things seem to be lagging”.

“For goodness’ sake, if the government is paying for your wages, capital investments, and ongoing costs, all you need is effective management and leadership, and the university won’t have any problems. The difficulty we are facing is that.”

“I don’t want to get into that, though, but I want you to know that the reason some of our universities in Nigeria have failed isn’t that the government isn’t working hard enough; it’s because of poor leadership”.

“This is due to the fact that even some of the country’s top-performing private universities do not receive more funding than comparable public institutions or gain access to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. But why does it appear that the place is more organized than the federal universities?”

“There are tons of very, very affordable private universities, but it seems like things are better organized there. It has to do with leadership. However, we have been able to handle some of these issues here, so we do not anticipate ours to be the same.”

He emphasized that the university was prepared to offer its students and other stakeholders world-class educational services and training as a result of the Federal Government’s acquisition of the institution.”

The vice-chancellor maintained that,

“In terms of funding, what the federal government can do and what the state government can do cannot be compared in university administration. Of course, the Federal Government inherits all the assets and liabilities of the institution it takes over. We are now a federal university after previously being a state university, and now that TETFUND, a division of the federal ministry of education, is in charge of looking after tertiary institutions, we have a better chance to enjoy capital projects, including annual interventions of up to N3 billion.

In conclusion he added that,

“This division of the federal ministry of education oversees the majority of the capital projects occurring in universities. That is significant. Even though state universities also gain from these advantages, federal universities benefit from them more. Here, along with another hostel, we plan to construct our information and communications technology center. That will be simpler with TETFUND funding”.
