The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat to launch military action against Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians, describing it as a matter that should alarm every Nigerian.
In a post on X on Monday, Obi said Trump’s comments and the U.S. government’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) call for urgent diplomatic engagement between both nations.
“The recent pronouncement by the U.S. government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” he stated.
Trump had on Saturday claimed that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in Nigeria and directed the Pentagon to prepare a possible plan of attack if the country fails to stop the alleged killings.
Obi decried the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, citing figures from Amnesty International which estimate that over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023. He said such levels of violence were unacceptable and largely preventable with competent leadership.
“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and shocking loss of lives and property,” Obi said. “While this did not start with the present government, what is unfortunate is the lack of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism, and passion on the part of the APC-led administration.”
He called on both Nigeria and the U.S. to pursue dialogue and strengthen diplomatic ties rather than resorting to threats, noting that both countries have long-standing partnerships committed to peace and regional stability.
“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter,” Obi added. “The situation calls for constructive diplomatic engagement aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns.”
