At least 10 people have been confirmed dead and 15 others injured following a landslide in northwest Colombia, authorities said on Tuesday.

Governor of Antioquia province, Andrés Julián Rendón, announced the fatalities in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding that search and rescue operations were ongoing as emergency teams continued digging through debris in search of survivors.

“With deep sadness, we report that a landslide has left at least 10 people dead and 15 injured. Search and rescue efforts continue at the scene,” Rendón wrote.

The landslide occurred in a rural part of Antioquia province, which has been battered by days of heavy rainfall—conditions that have significantly heightened the risk of landslides and flash floods.

Rescue efforts have involved local authorities, firefighters, and military personnel. Images shared on social media showed a large section of earth covering a road, with partially buried vehicles and responders working through thick mud to clear the area.

Officials have warned residents in high-risk areas to stay alert and evacuate if necessary as adverse weather conditions persist in the region.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro extended condolences to the victims’ families and commended emergency teams for their rapid response. “Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragedy. We will continue to support the response efforts in Antioquia,” he said.

Landslides are a recurring threat in Colombia’s mountainous terrain, especially during the rainy season, when prolonged rainfall weakens slopes and increases the likelihood of soil collapse.
