Lagos will host Africa’s first-ever E1 Electric Powerboat Championship from October 3 to 5, with organisers and the Lagos State Government pledging to deliver a world-class event that positions Nigeria’s commercial capital as a hub for tourism, innovation, and sustainability.

The competition, tagged the E1 Lagos GP, will feature more than 250 sports personalities and nine international teams, including those backed by global stars Didier Drogba and Will Smith. The event marks the first time the all-electric powerboat series will be staged on African waters, placing Lagos alongside host cities such as Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah.

At a press briefing on Monday, E1 Series Chief Executive Officer Rodi Basso said Lagos won the hosting rights after a competitive bid with several international cities. He described the event as a “major milestone for sport, sustainability, and commerce in Africa.”

“The ocean is one of nature’s most challenging environments, yet the boating industry is evolving. The E1 Series proves boats can become more sustainable by leveraging alternative power and innovative design,” Basso said.

Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Sam Egube, said the championship would highlight Lagos’ dynamism and potential. “For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this is proof of capacity. It signals economic opportunity, tourism growth, and global prestige,” he stated.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the influx of visitors during the event would boost the local economy, encouraging artisans, traders, and hospitality providers to seize opportunities. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, added that Lagos will soon launch the Omi Eko Project, deploying 72 electric boats to promote alternative water transport and reduce congestion.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, reaffirmed Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to positioning Lagos as a global destination under the THEMES+ development agenda.

Sports journalists at the event welcomed the initiative, saying it would cement Lagos’ place on the international sporting map while reinforcing its reputation as Africa’s investment capital.
