The Chinese government has expressed strong support for Nigeria and warned against any form of foreign interference following recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to take possible military action against the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, reaffirmed her country’s commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty and development, describing the West African nation as a “comprehensive strategic partner.”

“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao said.

She stressed that China “firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, or threatening them with sanctions and the use of force.”

Her remarks followed President Trump’s recent statement alleging persecution of Christians in Nigeria and warning of possible U.S. military intervention—a claim the Nigerian government has strongly denied.

The controversy escalated last week after the U.S. State Department redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged religious rights violations, a move that has strained diplomatic relations between both countries.

Analysts say China’s statement signals growing solidarity with Nigeria as tensions with Washington continue to mount.
