The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over alleged cybercrime to February 4, 2026. The adjournment was announced by Justice Mohammed Umar, who was absent on Monday, the date initially set for the commencement of the trial.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, was arraigned on June 30 on a six-count charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), Mohammed Abubakar. She was granted bail, and Justice Umar initially scheduled September 22 for the start of the trial.

The trial has faced multiple delays, including October 21, when proceedings were disrupted by a protest organized by activist Omoyele Sowore demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu. On that date, the defence lawyer, Ehiogie West-Idahosa, SAN, also raised a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction and alleging abuse of prosecutorial powers by the Attorney General of the Federation. The objection also cited the failure to serve the defence with copies of prosecution witness statements.

The prosecution, led by David Kaswe, argued that the objection should not prevent the trial from proceeding. Justice Umar said the court would first address the preliminary objection before taking further steps.

Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of transmitting false and injurious information electronically with the intent to malign, incite, and endanger lives, as well as disrupt public order. She allegedly claimed at a gathering on April 4 in Ihima, Kogi, and during a television interview, that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello plotted to have her killed.

The charges are brought under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act 2024.
