Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to ensure a fair and transparent process in the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The stool became vacant on July 13, 2025, following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away at 91 after over 65 years on the throne.
Speaking during a meeting with the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council in Iperu, Abiodun emphasized the importance of filling the vacant stool promptly, noting that “nature abhors a vacuum.” He assured that the state government would support any candidate duly selected by the kingmakers at the conclusion of the nomination process.
“The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and to ensure that all the processes which are enshrined in the laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed,” he said.
The governor expressed confidence that the succession process would be devoid of rancour, stressing the need to give all contenders equal opportunity. He also commended the council for preserving peace during the late monarch’s reign.
“I had to first of all wait for the 40 days to come and go before calling this meeting because all of us have been in mourning. I think what is most important is the fact that they are all deeply committed and dedicated chiefs of the Awujale, and I appreciate them,” Abiodun added.
Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to unity, peace, and progress in Ijebuland, pledging continued collaboration for the welfare of the community.
The meeting marks the governor’s first official engagement with the council since Oba Adetona’s passing, formally setting the stage for the succession process.
