Nigeria revived their 2026 World Cup qualifying hopes with a crucial 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali, on Friday night.
The match marked the debut of new head coach Eric Chelle, and the Super Eagles delivered an impressive performance.
Victor Osimhen stole the spotlight, netting a first-half brace to secure the win. The prolific striker, who has been in scintillating form for Galatasaray this season, opened the scoring with a precise side-footed finish from Ademola Lookman’s free-kick.
He then doubled Nigeria’s lead with a brilliant solo effort, dispossessing an opponent at the halfway line before delicately chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.
With this result, the three-time African champions move up to third place in their qualifying group, following South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho.
Next up for Chelle’s men is a home game against Zimbabwe on tuesday in Uyo.
