Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract with Liverpool, committing his future to Anfield until 2027. The 33-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season, but the Reds captain has now agreed a two-year extension.

Van Dijk’s new contract follows closely on the heels of Mohamed Salah’s announcement, with the Liverpool forward also signing a two-year extension earlier this week.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Van Dijk said:
“I’m very happy, very proud. There are so many emotions running through my head right now. It’s a feeling of pride, of joy — it’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it for another two years at this club, is amazing and I’m so happy.”

The Netherlands international joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a then-world-record fee of £75 million. Since arriving, he has enjoyed a hugely successful spell, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Appointed Liverpool captain in July 2023, Van Dijk is now steering Arne Slot’s side toward what would be their second Premier League title, with the team currently 13 points clear at the top with six games left to play.

Van Dijk made it clear that staying at Liverpool was never in doubt:
“It was always Liverpool. That was always the plan, always in my head. There was never any doubt — this is the place for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool.
Someone recently called me an adopted Scouser — hearing that made me incredibly proud.”

With Van Dijk and Salah’s futures secured, attention now turns to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 26-year-old, whose contract is also set to expire this summer, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. Growing speculation suggests the right-back could join the La Liga giants as a free agent at the end of the season.
