U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin as “absolutely CRAZY” following the largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the war began, and indicated that further sanctions against Moscow could be forthcoming. At the same time, Trump also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for comments he claimed were escalating tensions.
“Something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, referring to Putin. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it… but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!”
Despite the strong condemnation of Putin, Trump did not spare Zelensky, accusing the Ukrainian leader of worsening the situation with his rhetoric. “He is doing his Country no favours by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop,” Trump wrote.
Speaking to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, the president expressed concern over the violence: “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him? Right? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that.” Trump added that the U.S. is weighing additional sanctions in response to the escalating assault.
The remarks followed a massive Russian overnight barrage in which at least 367 drones and missiles were fired at Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, killing at least 12 civilians, including three children in the northern Zhytomyr region, according to Ukrainian officials. The strike is reported to be the largest in terms of munitions launched since the war’s onset.
Neither the Kremlin nor Zelensky’s office issued immediate responses to Trump’s comments.
While Trump has consistently called for a negotiated resolution to the conflict, fighting has only intensified. Russian forces continue to gain ground in eastern Ukraine, as both sides increasingly rely on drone warfare along the front lines. Diplomatic efforts remain stalled, with no end to the war in sight.
