Trump administration has reportedly made multiple attempts to initiate discussions with China over recently imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese goods, according to Yuyuan Tantian, a social media platform affiliated with China’s state broadcaster, CCTV.
In a Weibo post on Thursday, the account cited unnamed sources who claimed that Washington had “proactively” reached out to Beijing to resolve the escalating trade dispute. The outreach follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of steep tariff hikes on Chinese imports, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of trade tensions.
Despite the claims, China’s foreign ministry has denied any contact with U.S. officials on the matter. “As far as I know, there have been no consultations or negotiations between China and the U.S. on tariffs,” foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Last week, Trump told a U.S. media outlet that his administration was engaged in talks with China and that President Xi Jinping had personally contacted him — a statement Chinese officials have dismissed as untrue. Beijing has accused the U.S. of “misleading the public” and maintains that no formal discussions are underway.
