A massive advertising billboard collapsed on multiple commercial tricycles on Wednesday at the Salad Market junction along the busy Aba-Owerri Road in Aba, the commercial center of Abia State, causing injuries to several passengers and drivers.
The incident occurred during a heavy downpour and strong winds, which eyewitnesses say uprooted the billboard. The collapse also brought down high-tension electricity wires, plunging the area into darkness. Power will remain off until repairs are carried out by Aba Power Limited Electric (APLE).
While the exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, eyewitness reports indicate that numerous people were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. There are fears that some fatalities may have occurred. The affected tricycles were waiting to load or already transporting passengers along the Salad Market route.
Eyewitnesses Mr. Chike and Mrs. Blessing said the billboard, which had stood for several years, gave way at its base due to poor construction and a weak foundation. Structural engineers consulted on the scene criticized the absence of proper soil testing and substandard building practices at such a high-traffic location.
Nine tricycles were reportedly trapped under the fallen billboard at the time of the collapse.
Mrs. Blessing called the tragedy a warning to government regulatory bodies responsible for billboard approvals and monitoring. She urged stricter enforcement of safety standards and regular inspections to prevent future disasters.
Passersby and relatives of the victims were seen weeping uncontrollably at the scene, visibly shaken by the devastating event.
Fire service officials arrived shortly after and assisted in evacuating victims. Authorities are yet to release an official statement as investigations continue.
