The journey to continental glory and a spot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup begins today as the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt 2025, gets underway. Host nation Egypt will face South Africa in the tournament opener in Cairo.
Running from 27 April to 18 May, the competition gathers 13 teams vying not only for the African title but also for one of four coveted places at the U-20 World Cup set to take place in Chile later this year.
Group A features hosts Egypt alongside Zambia, South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania. In addition to the Cairo opener, today’s fixtures include Zambia going head-to-head with debutants Sierra Leone in Ismailia.
Egypt, three-time champions and a powerhouse at this level, are aiming to reclaim the trophy they last lifted in 2013. Head coach Osama Nabih believes his squad is up to the task.
“Our players are focused and eager to start strong. Their spirit and commitment have been clear in training,” Nabih said during the pre-match press conference on Saturday.
A former international himself, Nabih emphasized the growing competitiveness of African football: “There are no easy matches anymore. Every team is strong, and the difference in level is minimal. Success will come to those who give their all.”
He added that Egypt’s technical team has done its homework: “We’ve studied our group rivals thoroughly. Every team arrives with ambition and tactical depth. But we trust our players—they understand the challenge and are determined to represent Egypt with pride.”
Group B features record seven-time champions Nigeria, joined by Morocco, Tunisia, and Kenya. Defending champions Senegal are in Group C alongside Ghana, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic, whom they’ll face in their first match.
The U-20 AFCON has a rich legacy of producing African football legends like Mohamed Salah, Yaya Touré, Patson Daka, and Benni McCarthy. This year’s edition is expected to unearth the next generation of stars.
Beyond the quest for the trophy, the top four teams will earn a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, continuing Africa’s tradition of showcasing world-class young talent.
Anticipation is high in Cairo, where fans are expected to turn out in numbers to support the young Pharaohs. Meanwhile, Zambia aim to make a strong start against a determined Sierra Leone side making their first appearance at the tournament.
With pride, history, and World Cup dreams on the line, Africa’s premier youth football competition promises to deliver drama, talent, and unforgettable moments.
