A joint security patrol team was ambushed on Monday by suspected armed herdsmen in Benue State, leaving two officers injured and three others missing.
The incident occurred around 2:19 p.m. along the Daudu–Uikohol Expressway in Guma Local Government Area, according to a situation report from the Benue State Police Command.
The team—comprising personnel from the Police Mobile Force (13 PMF and 58 PMF), State Intelligence Services, Operation Zenda, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Benue Civil Protection Guards, and local vigilantes—was on routine patrol when they encountered burning huts roughly two kilometres off the expressway.
As they advanced to investigate, the team was ambushed by the armed assailants. A police inspector and an NSCDC officer sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.
However, another police inspector and two NSCDC personnel remain missing following the attack. A search and rescue operation is currently underway to locate them.
The assault adds to a growing wave of violence in Benue, especially in the Guma area, attributed to suspected armed herdsmen.
