Sudan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, has dissolved the country’s caretaker government, just one day after being sworn into office, according to a report by state news agency SUNA late Sunday.

The move marks the first major decision by Idris, who has become Sudan’s first prime minister since the military coup of 2021. Though no timeline was given for the announcement of a new cabinet, the decision signals a potential overhaul of Sudan’s political leadership amid ongoing conflict and instability.

Idris was appointed by the head of state and army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, at a time when the country is grappling with a prolonged war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has resulted in mass displacement and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

In his inaugural address, Idris pledged to maintain neutrality in Sudan’s fractured political environment, vowing to keep equal distance from all political factions. He also emphasized restoring national stability, enhancing security, and rebuilding the war-torn nation.

His appointment comes as the RSF, engaged in fierce fighting with government troops since 2023, announced plans earlier this year to establish a parallel government in alliance with certain political actors—raising further concerns over Sudan’s already fragile state.

While Idris’s full political agenda and the composition of his new government remain unclear, observers see his leadership as a potential turning point. However, the path forward depends largely on whether his administration can navigate Sudan toward a unified, civilian-led transitional process.
