Jenni Hermoso has been left out of Spain’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Women’s European Championship, with head coach Montse Tomé citing intense competition for places in her position.
The 35-year-old forward, who played a pivotal role in Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup triumph and is the national team’s all-time leading goalscorer, has seen limited involvement with the team in recent months.
Hermoso was also at the center of a high-profile controversy involving former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales, who was found guilty of sexual assault for kissing her without consent during post-match celebrations in Sydney. Rubiales claimed the kiss was consensual.
Currently playing club football in Mexico with Tigres, Hermoso was last called up for international duty during friendlies against Italy and Canada in October. She was also part of Spain’s squad at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Tomé explained: “I spoke with Jenni earlier this year. We had a conversation, and we approached her situation the same way we have with every other player. We evaluated her performances with Tigres, consulted her coach at various points, and made the decision based on what the team needs.”
Tomé noted that several players—Patri Guijarro, Maite Zubieta, Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Vicky López, Mariona Caldentey, and Clàudia Pina—are all viable options for Hermoso’s role, making competition for selection especially tough.
“It’s always difficult to narrow the list down to 23 players,” she added.
Spain has been drawn into Group B for the tournament in Germany, alongside Portugal, Belgium, and Italy. They’ll face Japan in a warm-up match on June 27, before kicking off their campaign against Portugal on July 3.
