The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
Nwakuche’s appointment, made by President Bola Tinubu on December 13, 2024, follows the retirement of Haliru Nababa.
His confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, submitted its report for consideration. Lawmakers unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendation during plenary on Tuesday, officially approving Nwakuche’s appointment.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while announcing the confirmation, tasked Nwakuche with the crucial responsibility of securing correctional facilities across the country.
Akpabio expressed confidence that under Nwakuche’s leadership, the persistent issue of jailbreaks would be effectively addressed.
His statement comes just days after 12 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, during an early morning incident on Monday, which also resulted in the death of a correctional officer.
With his appointment now confirmed, all eyes will be on Nwakuche to implement reforms and enhance security within Nigeria’s correctional system.
