Enugu, Nigeria – The newly introduced transport reform policy by the Enugu State Government has sparked mixed reactions among residents and transport operators, with concerns over job security and calls for inclusive implementation.

Nwafonews was live at Abakpa, one of the most densely populated suburbs in Enugu, on Friday, April 5, 2025, to gauge public sentiment following the rollout of the new transportation structure by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration.

Evalist Egwuatu, a commercial driver, expressed skepticism about the policy, describing it as a rumour yet to be confirmed. “If this policy is true, it will affect our only source of livelihood,” he said. Egwuatu appealed to the state government to consider the plight of transport operators and ensure their means of income is not completely taken away.

In contrast, Okonna Gideon welcomed the reform, describing it as a positive step toward modernizing Enugu’s transport system. However, he stressed the need for the reforms to have a “human face.” “The major fear of every tricycle and minibus driver is losing their job,” he noted. He urged the government to ensure that the newly constructed terminal parks accommodate all categories of transporters and called for a reduction in what he described as the over-taxation of commercial drivers.

Mr. Maxwell Eze also acknowledged the potential impact of the reform on both drivers and passengers. While noting possible disruptions, he commended Governor Mbah’s infrastructural development, especially the construction of new bus terminals. “These bus stops will help reduce traffic congestion and provide an organized system where passengers can easily get to their destinations,” Eze said.

Though the reactions from the streets vary, the state government has maintained that the transportation reform is geared towards building a world-class, efficient system for Ndi Enugu. With investments in terminal infrastructure and modern buses, the policy aims to streamline urban transit and enhance safety and order.
