The House of Representatives has donated N18 million to support victims of the January 25 petrol tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, presented the cheque to the Enugu State Government on Tuesday, describing the incident as a tragic loss not just for Enugu State, but for the entire nation. He said the donation reflects the House’s commitment to standing with Nigerians during times of distress.
The Speaker was represented by the Enugu State Caucus in the House, led by Hon. Nnolim Nnaji. Other members of the delegation included Hon. Martins Oke, Hon. Dennis Agbo, Hon. Mark Obetta, Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, and Hon. Chimaobi Atu.
“We commiserate with the Government and people of Enugu State over the Ugwu Onyeama tragedy,” Nnaji said. “This N18 million cheque is our way of further supporting the state in alleviating the suffering of those affected. The Speaker extends his heartfelt condolences and assures you of the continued support of the House.”
In his response, Governor Peter Mbah thanked the Speaker and the Enugu Caucus for their solidarity and support. He said the funds would be disbursed transparently to those affected by the disaster.
“On behalf of the government and people of Enugu State, I express our profound gratitude for this generous gesture. When the tragedy occurred, the Speaker reached out with words of comfort. Today, he has followed up with action,” Mbah said. “We assure you that the funds will reach the victims in an accountable and just manner.”
