Real Madrid has confirmed that defender Antonio Rudiger has undergone successful surgery to address a knee issue. The club released a statement on Tuesday, revealing that the German international was treated for a partial tear in the external meniscus of his left leg.
“Antonio Rudiger underwent successful surgery today for a partial tear in the external meniscus of his left leg,” the statement read. “He will begin his recovery process shortly.”
Spanish media had previously reported that the 32-year-old was contemplating surgery due to persistent knee discomfort.
Rudiger was also in the spotlight over the weekend after being sent off in the Copa del Rey final. The dismissal came following an emotional outburst at the referee, who penalized Rudiger for a challenge on Kylian Mbappe shortly after Jules Kounde scored in extra time to give Barcelona the lead.
The defender has since issued an apology for his conduct. He now faces a potential suspension ranging from four to twelve matches.
Real Madrid, currently trailing league leaders Barcelona by four points with five games remaining, will face Celta Vigo on Sunday.
