Rangers International FC suffered a surprising 2-0 defeat at home to Heartland FC of Owerri in a dramatic Oriental Derby clash on Match Day 33 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The encounter took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
Heartland took an early lead in the 20th minute through Surajudeen Lawal, silencing the home crowd who had turned out in high spirits to back their team. Heartland’s Technical Adviser, Emmanuel Amunike, praised his team’s performance, expressing satisfaction with the outcome. He emphasized the importance of the result and commended his players for their determination and focus.
In the aftermath of the loss, Rangers issued a public apology to their supporters via social media.
“A difficult day for us at home,” the club posted on Facebook. “We apologize to our fans and supporters who turned up in numbers. We are building a young team for the future, and while setbacks like this hurt, we remain committed to growing stronger.”
Next for the Flying antelopes is an away fixture against relegated Lobi stars at the cathedral, while Heartland will in Owerri take on Kwara united.
