A heavy rainstorm over the weekend caused extensive damage at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, destroying properties valued at several millions of naira.
The downpour, which began early on Saturday, was accompanied by strong winds that wreaked havoc across the camp, THISDAY gathered.
Key facilities affected include the camp’s electricity installations, the NYSC Multipurpose Hall, the Administrative Block, the camp mosque, and several hostel blocks housing corps members and officials.
The rainstorm also destroyed the camp’s saluting dais and the newly constructed volleyball court, one of the main attractions within the facility.
In addition, two vehicles belonging to camp officials were completely wrecked after a large tree, uprooted by the strong winds, fell on them.
A camp official, who confirmed the incident to THISDAY in Ilorin on Sunday under the condition of anonymity, said the storm had rendered many corps members currently undergoing their three-week orientation exercise homeless.
He appealed to the NYSC national secretariat and the Kwara State government for urgent assistance to restore facilities and make life more bearable for corps members at the camp.
