Spanish second-tier club Malaga is officially on the market, attracting growing interest from potential buyers. While recent reports suggested that Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) was in advanced talks to acquire the club, a new contender has emerged—Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the US-based owners of Liverpool.
FSG aims to expand its global football portfolio, following the multi-club ownership model adopted by Manchester City and Red Bull. Malaga has now become a key target in their search for expansion opportunities.
At the center of the sale is Qatari businessman Abdullah Al-Thani, Malaga’s majority owner since 2010. Al-Thani initially invested heavily in the club, propelling them to the Champions League quarter-finals.
However, financial backing dried up in subsequent years, leading to Malaga’s relegation from La Liga in 2018 and ongoing struggles both on and off the pitch. The club is currently under judicial financial administration, while real estate group BlueBay holds a 49% minority stake.
FSG previously explored acquiring French side Bordeaux before withdrawing from negotiations. Now, Malaga has become an attractive proposition, particularly with the city set to be one of the host venues for the 2030 World Cup. Plans for a major renovation of La Rosaleda stadium further enhance the club’s appeal.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, FSG sees significant commercial and sporting potential in Malaga. With its strong footballing heritage, strategic location, and untapped market potential, the club could provide a valuable foothold in Spanish football for the American investors.
As discussions progress, Malaga’s future remains uncertain, but a high-profile takeover could mark the beginning of a new era for the historic club.
