The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the arrest of 28 suspects linked to the June 13 attacks in Yelewata and Daudu communities, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun said the suspects were apprehended as part of ongoing investigations into the massacre that claimed the lives of farmers and internally displaced persons. The attacks drew widespread condemnation, including from President Bola Tinubu, who criticised the delayed response in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The police chief noted that efforts are underway to arrest more suspects and assured that security operations in the affected areas have been intensified. He added that the force is committed to retrieving illegal light and small arms from unauthorised individuals.
In a related development, Egbetokun announced the arrest of 22 suspects in Jos, Plateau State, over the killing of nine wedding guests in Quanpan. He said all the arrested individuals would be prosecuted soon.
The IGP also disclosed that border patrol operations have been strengthened to prevent the entry of irregular migrants into the country, as part of broader national security measures.
