The Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU) has announced that it is activating the implementation structures for the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Project (GIP) in Nigeria.

Six regional offices will be established to support the onboarding of 774 mid-sized commercial farms and the creation of six regional equipment hubs, with final preparations underway. The update was provided following the PFSCU’s 5th Steering Committee (STEERCO) meeting held recently in Abuja.

Key endorsements and collaborations were secured during the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting on April 24, 2025, reinforcing the committee’s commitment to accelerating Nigeria’s food systems transformation amid growing pressures and long-term priorities.

The meeting included a critical review of the national food security dashboard, which highlighted worsening conditions in the wheat and rice value chains. The report revealed rising market prices, increasing input costs, and an influx of imported alternatives that have negatively impacted local farmers.

In a statement, the PFSCU emphasized that the new platforms will provide farmers with technical and financial resources to modernize their operations, boosting production and productivity across rural economies. The unit reiterated its focus on delivering measurable impact and building resilient food systems to ensure Nigeria’s food security for generations.

In response to the challenges within the food value chains, the committee approved the formation of an Emergency Ad-Hoc Taskforce to conduct a rapid assessment and submit urgent recommendations to the President.

The statement added, “This move highlights the administration’s responsiveness to immediate challenges and its determination to protect vulnerable segments of the food system.”

To strengthen long-term agricultural planning, the committee also endorsed the National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism (NAPM), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at aligning agricultural investments and planning across the three levels of government. By integrating satellite data, farmer insights, and digital infrastructure, NAPM will enhance coordination and transparency in managing Nigeria’s agricultural resources.

The initiative received a $1 million contribution from private sector partners to support data collection, platform development, and evidence-based decision-making.

Recognizing the critical link between food security and national stability, the PFSCU is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to develop an Early Warning and Rapid Response System. This next-generation platform will use AI and advanced analytics to predict potential disruptions in Nigeria’s food supply, allowing for timely and coordinated interventions.

As part of its outreach efforts, the PFSCU also announced the launch of the Harvesting Hope Caravan, a nationwide tour across all six geopolitical zones. The initiative will feature interactive town halls, live demonstrations, and cultural showcases to share progress, gather community feedback, and build support for the Renewed Hope agenda in agriculture.
