Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has officially aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for a newly formed opposition coalition, signaling a bold political move aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Obi described the coalition’s adoption of the ADC as a strategic step toward uniting opposition forces around a common goal of delivering competent and people-centered leadership.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections,” Obi wrote. “With Distinguished Senator David Mark as National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, we are charting a path forward.”

The announcement comes amid mounting internal tensions within the Labour Party. Just days before, the party reportedly issued Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to clarify his stance on the emerging coalition. His declaration now confirms a shift away from the LP, and toward a broader opposition alliance.

Obi emphasized that the coalition’s mission is rooted in urgency and a shared desire to address Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges.

“Our commitment is to work together, make sacrifices, and ensure that in 2027, Nigeria gets a leadership that is competent, capable, and compassionate—one that puts the welfare of Nigerians first,” he stated.

Framing the decision as both strategic and moral, Obi called for unity among progressive voices seeking to break the country’s cycle of poverty, insecurity, and failed governance.

“This decision was not made lightly,” he said. “It followed deep reflection on Nigeria’s current state and what must be done to change its trajectory. No single group can transform Nigeria alone. To dismantle the entrenched systems that keep our people in hardship, we must build bridges—even when they are uneasy.”

Obi’s participation marks a significant boost to the ADC-led coalition, which aims to present a united front by bringing together influential figures from multiple parties, including the PDP and even dissenting members of the ruling APC. The coalition is expected to intensify its efforts in the months ahead as it prepares to challenge the APC’s grip on power in the next general election.
