The Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, has described the Olympic Day Celebration as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility towards sports development, as well as a celebration of unity and community spirit.
Barrister Ekweremadu, speaking at the event, conveyed the message of His Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to advancing sports in the state through both infrastructure and human capital development.
The 2025 Olympic Day Celebration in Enugu was highlighted by a 2-kilometre walk through the streets of the city, led by the Commissioner and his team, alongside notable sports personalities, cyclists, and cultural performers including Ogene musicians.
The event also featured an exciting novelty volleyball match between the Enugu Volleyball Team and an arm wrestling demonstration by the Enugu State Arm Wrestling Team. These activities were organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to celebrate and entertain the athletes and attendees.
In an interview at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the venue of the event – Commissioner Ekweremadu emphasized the significance of the celebration, noting that Olympic Day serves as an inspiration to reignite the state’s passion for sports development.
“In the Governor’s speech, he emphasized that this Olympic Day Celebration is a spark to fuel our passion for developing sports in Enugu State. The vision of this administration is clear – we aim to develop both sports infrastructure and the human resources involved, including athletes and technical officials,” he stated.
He continued, “This event serves as a timely reminder of our shared responsibilities. I’m proud that we’ve been able to bring it to life. It’s the second time we’re organizing this under my leadership, and it has been a resounding success.”
Ekweremadu highlighted the broader significance of the event: “It’s more than just sports. Today is a celebration of unity, wellness, and friendship. Olympic Day creates a level playing field for everyone, allowing people from all walks of life to come together, engage in physical activity, and celebrate the spirit of togetherness.”
