Obidient Movement, a political group backing Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for comments made against Obi regarding the ongoing leadership crisis in the Labour Party.

Akpabio had recently mocked Obi’s leadership, saying someone who wants to lead a complex nation like Nigeria should first be able to resolve internal issues within his party.

In a swift response on Saturday, the Movement’s Director of Strategic Communication and Media, Nana Kazaure, issued a statement in Awka accusing Akpabio’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), of fueling the crisis in the Labour Party by providing state-backed security for the ousted party chairman, Julius Abure.

“It is no surprise that the 10th Senate under Akpabio’s leadership is widely regarded as the worst in Nigeria’s history,” Kazaure said. “His lack of discretion and poor judgment are already well known.”

The group pointed out that the Labour Party’s internal dispute was lawfully addressed through the judicial system, with the Supreme Court ruling against Abure’s continued leadership. They alleged that despite the ruling, Abure remains in office with the support of the APC.

“It is both ironic and hypocritical for Senator Akpabio to comment on a crisis his own party has helped manufacture,” the statement read.

The Movement maintained there is no genuine crisis within the Labour Party, only what it described as “externally-driven disruptions” orchestrated by the ruling APC.

Kazaure concluded by defending Obi’s record, stating that his achievements in public service remain unmatched and cannot be diminished by political attacks.
