Abeokuta is set to come alive this weekend as it hosts the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival, Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event. Dubbed “Gateway Games Ogun 2024,” the festival will commence with a vibrant and culturally rich ceremony on Sunday, where Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to officially declare the Games open.
Bringing together the best of Nigerian athletics, the event promises two weeks of thrilling competition, cultural celebration, and national unity. Since its inception in 1973, the National Sports Festival has embodied the values of patriotism, unity, and excellence—and this year’s edition is poised to continue that proud legacy.
Hosting for the second time since 2006, Ogun State has pulled out all the stops to ensure a world-class event. Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has reaffirmed the state’s readiness to welcome athletes, officials, and guests from across the federation.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, along with Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, highlighted the Festival’s role as more than a sporting tradition—it is a vital platform for nurturing young talent and fostering national cohesion through sport.
Breaking new ground this year is the inclusion of a symbolic “38th state”—the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA), a team of standout young athletes competing independently to showcase the next generation of Nigerian sports stars.
Over 10,000 athletes from the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the IJA team will compete across 33 sporting disciplines, making this one of the most expansive editions in the event’s history.
Beyond the competitions, Gateway Games Ogun 2024 will be a celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity. Spectacular opening and closing ceremonies, as well as daily displays of traditional music, dance, and art, will highlight the nation’s heritage.
Competitions will be held at top-tier venues including the Alake Sports Centre, MKO Abiola Stadium, Remo Stars Stadium, and other key locations. Athletes and officials will be accommodated at Babcock University, which serves as the official Games Village, offering a safe and comfortable environment.
